This November, Moving Minds is proud to launch Momentum, a year-long dance programme in York created especially for people living with Young Onset Dementia (YOD) and their friends and family. The project has been made possible through funding from Sport England, whose support allows us to bring more inclusive and creative opportunities for health and wellbeing to our community.
Why Momentum?
In the UK, around 70,800 people are living with Young Onset Dementia – dementia diagnosed before the age of 65. For some, this means receiving a diagnosis in their 40s or 50s, at a stage of life where they may still be working, raising children, or leading active lifestyles.
Too often, existing dementia services are designed with older adults in mind. Social groups, activities, and care pathways may not reflect the energy levels, interests or abilities of people who are younger and physically more active. This gap can leave people with YOD feeling isolated and unsupported, struggling to find meaningful activities that suit their needs.
Momentum has been created to address this challenge. It offers something bespoke: an active, creative, and welcoming space where people can move, connect, and thrive.

Why Dance?
Dance is far more than physical activity. It is a holistic practice that benefits body, mind, and spirit. For people living with Young Onset Dementia, dance can offer:
Physical benefits: improving balance, mobility, coordination, and strength – all of which support independence and reduce the risk of falls.
Mental health benefits: movement to music reduces stress, lifts mood, and supports confidence.
Creativity and expression: dance provides an outlet for self-expression beyond words, allowing people to communicate and explore identity in new ways.
Social connection: dancing together builds community, helping people feel less alone and more understood.
One participant in a previous Moving Minds project shared: “When I’m dancing, I forget I have dementia. I just feel like myself again.” That sense of freedom and joy is at the heart of Momentum.
A Space for Friends and Family
We know that dementia affects not only the individual but also those around them. That’s why Momentum is open to friends, partners and family members too. Dancing together creates opportunities for connection, fun, and shared experience. It can ease stress for carers, build stronger relationships, and create joyful memories.

Backed by Sport England
We are delighted that Sport England is supporting Momentum. Their funding recognises the importance of making physical activity accessible to everyone, regardless of age, ability, or health condition. With their support, we can offer a long-term programme that responds to a clear local need.
Join Us
Momentum begins on Friday 7th November in York and will run weekly. No previous dance experience is required – just a willingness to move, explore, and take part in a supportive community.
